SHORT ANSWER
Apply a stencil to practice skin using thermal transfer paper and green soap (or stencil solution). Press firmly, peel slowly, and let it dry 10–15 minutes before tattooing. If the stencil smears during transfer, you're not pressing firmly enough or the surface is too wet.
What you need
Thermal transfer paper (not carbon copy paper), green soap or stencil solution, a clean dry practice pad, and 10–15 minutes of patience.
Step by step
1. Clean the pad surface with a dry cloth. 2. Apply a thin layer of green soap or stencil solution. 3. Place the stencil face down, press firmly and evenly. 4. Peel slowly from one corner. 5. Let it dry 10–15 minutes — do not start tattooing while the stencil is wet.
Common mistakes
Starting too soon (stencil smears on first wipe). Using too much solution (stencil bleeds). Not pressing firmly enough (partial transfer). Using the wrong paper (carbon copy paper doesn't transfer cleanly to silicone).
When to skip the stencil
If you're practicing freehand or working on line control drills, skip the stencil entirely. Stencils help with placement, but they can become a crutch if you never practice without one.
